Here’s some breathing room if you’re still on Windows 10: Microsoft has quietly extended its free Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for consumers through October 12, 2027 — a full year beyond the October 2026 cutoff everyone had been planning around. The change slipped in without a big announcement, but it matters for millions of PCs.
So does that mean you can relax and forget about upgrading? Not quite. The extension is helpful, yet Microsoft has been clear that ESU is a temporary bridge, not a reprieve. It keeps your PC patched, but it holds back features, support, and increasingly the apps you rely on.
Below, we break down exactly what changed, what ESU does and doesn’t cover, how consumers and businesses differ, and why moving to Windows 11 is still the smart long-term play — often for far less than you’d expect.
The short version
✔ Free Windows 10 ESU for consumers now runs through Oct 12, 2027
✔ It’s security updates only — no features, no support
✔ The permanent fix is still Windows 11
Ready to move up? A genuine Windows 11 Pro license is just $14.99 — for a new PC, a clean install, or upgrading from Home.

Windows 10 officially reached end of support on October 14, 2025. To ease the transition, Microsoft launched a consumer ESU program that was originally set to expire in October 2026. Now, however, that window has been pushed back a full year — coverage runs through October 12, 2027.
Just as importantly, enrolling is easy and usually free. You can join at no cost simply by syncing your PC settings with a Microsoft account. Alternatively, you can redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or pay a one-time $30 fee. Better still, a single ESU license covers up to 10 devices.
Consumer ESU at a glance:
✔ Coverage now through October 12, 2027
✔ Free with PC settings sync — or 1,000 Rewards points, or $30 once
✔ One license covers up to 10 devices
✔ Requires Windows 10, version 22H2
What ESU does NOT give you
This is where the fine print matters. ESU delivers critical and important security patches — and nothing else. Therefore, you won’t get new features, quality improvements, or technical support. It keeps the doors locked, but it doesn’t upgrade the house.
Meanwhile, the pressure around Windows 10 keeps building. The original 2011 Secure Boot certificates started expiring in 2026, which can cause startup and security issues on devices that aren’t kept current. On top of that, more apps and websites are beginning to restrict or drop support for older operating systems, so staying put slowly limits what your PC can do.
Consumers vs businesses: very different deals
The free extension applies to personal devices. Businesses, however, face a different reality. Companies enrolling through volume licensing pay per device, and the cost climbs sharply each year.
Business ESU pricing (per device):
Year 1 → $61
Year 2 → $122
Year 3 → $244 (coverage up to October 2028)
⚠ Cumulative: enroll late and you still pay for prior years
For a fleet of PCs, those doubling fees add up fast. Consequently, many organizations find that migrating to Windows 11 is cheaper than paying escalating ESU costs year after year.
Why upgrading to Windows 11 is still the smart move
ESU buys time, but Windows 11 solves the problem. It’s the version Microsoft actively develops, so you get ongoing security, new features, and full support rather than a frozen, patched-only system. In fact, Windows 11 in 2026 has added genuinely useful upgrades, from a movable taskbar to faster app launches.
There’s also the cost angle. Upgrading is free for licensed Windows 10 users whose hardware meets Windows 11’s requirements — so if your PC qualifies, there’s little reason to wait. The catch is that many older machines don’t meet those requirements, which is exactly why planning your move now beats scrambling in 2027.
How to move to Windows 11 (and where a license helps)
If your current PC is compatible, you can upgrade straight from Windows Update at no cost. If instead you’re building a new PC, doing a clean install, or you’re on Windows 10 Home and want the extra Pro features, you’ll need a genuine Windows 11 license — and that’s where you don’t have to pay Microsoft’s full price.
On our store, a genuine Windows 11 Pro retail key is $14.99 instead of Microsoft’s $199.99, with lifetime activation and instant delivery. So you get BitLocker, Remote Desktop, Hyper-V and the full professional toolset without overpaying.
The bottom line
The extension to October 2027 is welcome news, especially if you’re not ready to switch today. Still, ESU is a bridge, not a destination — security-only, temporary, and increasingly limiting. For businesses, the escalating fees make the case for Windows 11 even stronger.
Ultimately, the extra time is best used to plan your move, not to postpone it indefinitely. If your PC supports Windows 11, upgrade and enjoy full features and support. And if you need a genuine license along the way, Windows 11 Pro is ready at $14.99 — no waiting, no overpaying.
